This year we may not be able to celebrate with big parades and gatherings, but you can still show off your Norwegian spirit with these fun crafts, thanks to our children's education coordinator, Alison. Syttende Mai—which is Norwegian for "17th of May"—is Norwegian Constitution Day, commemorating the signing of their constitution in 1814. Syttende Mai has been celebrated in Seattle since 1889—before Washington was even a state—and the Seattle festivities are the largest outside of Norway. With this year’s Syttende Mai parade in Ballard cancelled, try these activities instead to celebrate Syttende Mai at home!
Build with LEGO
Build your own Norwegian flag using LEGO bricks! Follow the design to build a mosaic style Norwegian flag on a baseplate.
Make a Patriotic Bird
Celebrate spring and Syttende Mai at the same time with a cheerful red, white, and blue paper bird! Use the template to trace a body and wing onto colored paper, cut out, and glue together. Don’t have patterned or colored paper? Make your own using white paper and pens, crayons, or colored pencils. Add a googly eye if you have one on hand!
Decorate some cookies
For a tasty treat, make your favorite cookies—sugar cookies are always a hit—and decorate them with red, white, and blue sprinkles.
