The Whimsical World of Bjørn Wiinblad

(Jul 28, 2018 - Nov 05, 2018)

A celebration of the iconic Danish artist who threw mid-century Scandinavian minimalism out the window and was loved for it, The Whimsical World of Bjørn Wiinblad exhibit has been adapted from the original developed by the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj, Denmark. Several large-scale pieces are on loan from Denmark, alongside an assortment of works from private collectors across the US.

This retrospective highlights the artist’s substantial body of work, including graphic art, ceramics, theater sets and costumes, ceramics, tapestries, jigsaw puzzles, tiles, and textiles gathered from the Museum of Danish America, The Blue House in Denmark, and private collectors. These 78 artifacts offer a thorough sense of Wiinblad’s diverse interests and mastery of art forms, from one-of-a-kind commissions to mass-produced pop culture.

Bjørn Wiinblad (1918–2006) was an artist who embraced it all — every medium and every color, from the handmade to the mass-produced. This exhibit surveys his work with ceramics, theatrical costumes, posters, tapestry, and more. With a career beginning in 1945 amidst the enduringly popular “Danish modern” design movement, Wiinblad injected fantasy and an almost cartoonish flair that created a perfect accent to all the clean-lined furniture and modernist spaces of the time. Original exhibition developed by Arken Museum of Modern Art (Ishøj, Denmark). American tour organized by the Museum of Danish America (Elk Horn, Iowa) and curated by Tova Brandt.
