Oct 04, 2020 - Oct 18, 2020
12:00am - 12:00pm PST

We Carry it Within Us, by director Helle Stenum, investigates collective memory and different perspectives on the shared colonial past between Denmark and U.S. Virgin Islands. In We Carry It Within Us, the legacy of slavery, the memory of the Danish presence, the sale of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, and the relationship of the islands to the U.S., are told through interviews conducted on St. Croix, in New York, and in Copenhagen.

The film was released during the centennial year of the transfer of the islands from Denmark to the United States. La Vaughn Belle was one of the main subjects featured in this hour-long documentary. La Vaughn Belle: A History of Unruly Returns is on view at the Museum October 6, 2020 through January 3, 2021.

You can view the movie online October 4–18, and be sure to join us October 11 at 11am for a Q&A event with filmmaker Helle Stenum.
