Virtual Class: Fair Isle Knit Weave with Allyce Wood

Date & Time

Sun, Nov 14, 2021
1:00pm - 4:00pm PST

Location

This is a virtual event

Learn the basics of fair isle knitting beginning with two colors of yarn, knitting needles, and step-by-step instruction. Look through examples of one-of-a-kind knit artworks by Visual Artist Allyce Wood and some of her international inspiration to best explore the creative potential of this type of colorwork. Together we will look through some of the histories of this unique methodology, and how it can continue to be used in both art and craft contexts.

In this class, Wood will discuss the practical theory of fair isle knitting, going over terminology, effects, and color stories. We will examine charts, the way patterns are plotted, and create some of our own using simple graph paper. Whether you are interested in knitting garments or tapestry-like wall hangings, you will gain the design and practical skills needed to build your own images and expressions. With the basics learned here, you will be able to go on to produce your own unique motifs!

Materials: Please come prepared with two colors of the same yarn (medium to chunky weight preferred) and correspondingly gauged knitting needles (straight or circular) as well as stitch markers. We will also need a pencil, eraser, and grid paper. Please be prepared to begin class with the ability to cast on and use the stockinette stitch.

Learn more about Allyce Wood and her artwork on her website and follow her on Instagram.

Please note: these classes will be recorded. Class participants will have access to these recordings for a limited time after the live classes. The Museum may use these recordings in future educational programs after the Nordic Knitting Conference. By signing up for this class, you are giving consent to the Museum to record these classes.

Cost: $60 for members, $70 general admission
