Virtual Class: Advanced Sámi Knitting Techniques with Laura Ricketts

Date & Time

Fri, Nov 12, 2021
1:00pm - 4:00pm PST

Location

This is a virtual event

The Sámi are Scandinavia’s only UN-recognized indigenous people and have a culture rich with fiber traditions. In Advanced Sami Knitted Mitten Techniques, students will be introduced to Sami mittens and some of the more difficult techniques while creating several sample swatches: right and left leaning knitted braids, three ways to do right and left leaning knitted braid cast-ons (in two and three colors), and a 4-strand, rounded braid with tassels that is often on the cuff of Sami mittens.

While these techniques are reserved for the more special Sámi mittens, each one can be applied to your own knitting at home, too.

Skill level - advanced

Required materials: Worsted weight, wool yarn — two accent colors and a main color (natural); needles to achieve a gauge of 5sts/in. Students will also need a stapler, painters tape, and a business card.

Ricketts recommends Rauma Vams PT3 knit on US 5 / 3.75 mm needles.

Please note: these classes will be recorded. Class participants will have access to these recordings for a limited time after the live classes. The Museum may use these recordings in future educational programs after the Nordic Knitting Conference. By signing up for this class, you are giving consent to the Museum to record these classes.

Cost: $80 for members, $90 general admission
