Virtual Class: Faroese Footlets, or Skóleistar with Laura Ricketts

Please note that this is a two part class, taking place on the following two dates/times: 

  • Saturday, November 13, 9am-12pm Pacific Time
  • Sunday, November 14, 9am-12pm Pacific Time

Skóleistar are the woolen soft shoe liner from the Faroe Islands, traditionally worn inside wooden clogs or rain shoes, but they also double as a cosy house slipper. In this class, we will explore some of the knitting traditions of the Faroe Islands, and choose among two charted designs to make our own pair of skóleistar.

Skill level: Advanced, must be able to knit and purl colorwork patterns

Required materials

  • Yarn Cascade 220, 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 220 yards (200 m)/ 100g (3.5 oz); colors #7822 Van Dyke brown (MC) and #8010 Natural (CC) (or, 2 contrasting colors of your choice)
  • (alternatively -- Ella Rae Classic Marls, 100% Superwash Wool, 219 yards (200 m)/100g (3.5 oz); 1 skein each of #603 Apple and #606 Orange)
  • Needles: set of double pointed size 4 US (3.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Markers (m), tapestry needle, size D crochet hook (optional), puffy paint (optional)
  • Gauge single-color slipper 11 sts x 14 rows = 2 in; color work slipper 12 sts x 12 rows = 2 in over color work

Registration for this class includes a handout and pattern, which will be sent out ahead of the first class. 

Please note: these classes will be recorded. Class participants will have access to these recordings for a limited time after the live classes. The Museum may use these recordings in future educational programs after the Nordic Knitting Conference. By signing up for this class, you are giving consent to the Museum to record these classes.
