9:00am - 12:00pm PST

This is a virtual event

In this class we’ll dive into knitting traditions in the Nordic countries by knitting a mini sock in the Selbu style. The Selbu style is characterized by detailed and ornate patterns, typically sporting the Selbu star - or Selburose. In this class you’ll learn all the techniques you’ll need to knit a Norwegian style sock. From basic to advanced, you will learn the typical cast on technique and knitting the rib. You’ll also learn how to knit an afterthought heel, how different heel techniques will affect the pattern, the sock and the fit. Last - but not least - you’ll learn how to succeed in the art of stranded knitting, from holding the strands of yarn to correcting mistakes.

The goal of the class is to finish a mini sock. A pattern will be provided and three hour course will guide you through all the steps of knitting the pattern.

For this class, you'll need the following materials:

  • Three small skeins of yarn. In terms of yarn weight these should be super fine, so anything from sock, fingering or baby. You should be able to obtain a gauge of 28 stitches per 10 cm, or approximately 7 stitches per inch. Scrap yarn is fine, and no more than 20 grams should be more than sufficient in any color they prefer.
  • Needles: 2 and 2.5 needles European size (size 0 and 1, or 2, depending on their gauge).

Please note: these classes will be recorded. Class participants will have access to these recordings for a limited time after the live classes. The Museum may use these recordings in future educational programs after the Nordic Knitting Conference. By signing up for this class, you are giving consent to the Museum to record these classes.

Cost: $80 for members, $90 for general admission
