Virtual Class: Sámi Knitting from Sweden with Laura Ricketts

Date & Time

Sat, Jan 29, 2022
3:00pm - 5:00pm PST

Location

This is a virtual event

Skaite-Maria was a Sámi woman in northern Sweden who created her own, easily recognizable knitting about a hundred years ago. In this class, you will be recreating a historically accurate, Swedish Sámi knitted mitten based on Laura Ricketts' article in PieceWork magazine, written in collaboration with Erika Nordvall-Falck. Together, cast on and work through several aspects of The Red and the Black mitten, working small, geometric designs to form a sturdy, hardwearing hand garment.

 Skill Level: Beginner-Intermediate

This is a two part class which takes place over two weekends on Zoom:

  • Saturday, January 29th, 3pm-5pm Pacific Time

  • Saturday, February 5th, 3pm-5pm Pacific Time

This class requires students to provide their own materials; see list below! Registration includes pattern ($8 value), which will be provided before class.

Yarn & Materials: Rauma Strikkegarn, 3 ply, 100% Norwegian wool yarn, DK weight, 118 yards (107.9 m)/50 gram (1.8 oz) ball, 1 ball each of #136 Black (MC) and #124 Bright Red (CC); set of 5 double pointed size 1.5 (2.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge; scrap of smooth waste yarn for thumb, 2 markers and a tapestry needle; 15.5 sts and 16 rnds = 2 in over checked pattern

Homework: Swatch to find correct needle size to get gauge. Using long-tail method and black (MC), CO 64 sts. Divide evenly onto 4 dpn, pm, and join in the round being careful not to twist. Work two rnds of k2, p2 rib in MC and bring to the virtual class on the needles.
