*Note: this event was originally scheduled to take place in January; tickets purchased for last month's event are valid in February.

Join us for our monthly lunch program, and enjoy a Nordic film and hot soup at the Museum! This month, we watch the Finnish/Estonian film: The Fencer/Miekkailija (2015).

Inspired by the life of Estonian fencing champion Endel Nelis, The Fencer is set in Haapsalu, Estonia, in the early 1950s. Having left Leningrad to escape the secret police, Endel finds work as a teacher and starts an after-school sports club for his students. When he teaches his students how to fence, his great passion for the sport conflicts with the need to keep his background hidden.

"...this well-acted, smoothly crafted drama tells a story of cross-generational bonding in the face of historical oppression." - Variety

When Endel's students wish to participate in a national fencing tournament in Leningrad, he must make a choice: risk everything, or put his safety first.

We will be serving soup, bread, coffee, and cookies.

Cost: $15 for Members; $20 general admission (price includes food and refreshments; RSVP required.)

Please note: The National Nordic Museum requires that all Soup & Cinema attendees be vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may include CDC Vaccination Card (or photo), documentation from a health care provider, or state immunization system record. In addition, registration for this program now closes one week prior to the film screening. Please register by Tuesday, February 1, to reserve your seat.
